As we work to wind down 2018 and look forward to 2019, it is the time to stop and consider what has happened and what could happen. After all, this is the time of year where we celebrate the holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. No matter which holidays we celebrate, it is a season where we have the opportunity to contemplate the power of the impossible.
If you have been following me, you know that I’m a visionary facilitator working with clients determined to do what others think is impossible. I foster that disruption by helping them connect to collaborate to then create an innovation that disrupts themselves, their team, business or industry. Central to that breakthrough is the story we tell and the language we use.
Over the course of the next 6 posts, I will examine (and I hope we you will engage with me) in the intriguing process of unleashing the disruptive power of the impossible. To do that, we must Tap the Unseen in 2019.
To succeed, break through, innovate or disrupt, we must become leaders with vision. Notice I didn’t say, “a vision” but rather a leader with vision. To do what others don’t think possible, we must see what others don’t. As we look into 2019, let’s tap into that world of the unseen. Let’s see the potential that others don’t. When we do we have opportunities that others won’t.
Leverage Six Disruptive Power Tools
How do we learn to see the unseen?
It takes a special power, or what I like to call six disruptive power tools. We can leverage each of these to sense and seize opportunities that others view as ridiculously impossible.
What are the six? They are the power of appreciation, potential, vision, guidance, collaboration, and action. I’ll begin today and then address a separate power tool over the course of the next 5 weeks. We begin with the power of appreciation today.
Appreciation is defined as “the act of estimating the qualities of things and giving them their proper value.” As leaders, we leverage that power when we take time to calculate the value of our past experiences, current team members or future opportunities. When we know the value, we can plan the best strategy and maximize our results.
Notice it all starts with appreciation, seeing the value in everything.
First, look back upon your experiences in 2019 and find the value. Look at the good times but also the negative experiences.
- What important lessons did you learn?
- How are you better equipped to succeed in 2019 than you were before those experiences?
Second, consider your team members. Make a list. Don’t leave anyone out. Go through the list one by one and write down the answers to the following questions. Remember, keep it positive. If you find it difficult, pause and look deeper for the value they provided. Remember, it is the difficulty that stretches us, not the easy.
- What did value did each team member provide in preparing you to seize great opportunities this year?
- What will having those experiences with those team members provide for succeeding in 2019?
Third, look to the future and consider your opportunities.
What does each one offer?
- What are the short-term benefits?
- What are the long-term benefits?
- What are the challenges?
The Power of Appreciation
Many opportunities are missed and therefore wasted when we fail to appreciate the lessons we have learned, the value that each team member has provided and the potential in the opportunities available to us.
When we find the value in all experiences, we learn from them, make ourselves better and that prepares us to maximize any new experience. That is tapping an unseen power to do the impossible. Too often we beat ourselves up or feel like the world has victimized us. When that happens, we are sapping our own strength. Feeling sorry for ourselves, we are not at our best and don’t see the incredible opportunities.
Appreciating others is a powerful tool that leaders often ignore. Our team members want to be valued. They want you to reaffirm the unique value they add. They also want and need to hear that publicly. So celebrate them. Don’t just give awards to the top producers but rather celebrate the value that each provides to the success. When you celebrate their unique value in a way that they fully appreciate, you will have unleashed an unseen power that will amaze you.
At the same time, appreciating your team’s potential holds the power to disrupt. Most never fully appreciate the potential because they don’t appreciate their team or don’t appreciate what could happen.
They simply don’t believe it is possible.
So they trudge through the drudgery of the daily grind determined that it will never get any better. They are right. With that attitude it won’t improve.
But when we appreciate the lessons we have learned, the value of everyone we have worked with (and continue to work with) and then see the potential of the future, we are in for a phenomenal experience.
As we pause for an official time of Thanksgiving and as we prepare to break through in 2019, tap the unseen potential by appreciating what we have experienced, who we have worked with and the potential of the future.
